The winter weather can get quite rough. Even though you might have been cozy all tucked away indoors, the same can’t be said of your roof. It is out there in the elements all year long, and there is a chance that it could have suffered from some damage over the winter. Below are some of the biggest signs of winter weather damage.

Missing Shingles and Damaged Shingles

One of the first things you will want to look at on your roof will be the shingles. Do you have any missing shingles or those that have been damaged? If there are, it can lead to leaks and water damage, mold, and other issues. Fortunately, replacing some shingles tends not to be too costly. Taking care of this problem sooner rather than later is always important, as you should do with any roof issue.

Granules

Something else you will want to look for will be granules. These are the crushed minerals that are on the shingles. While shingles will lose some granules over time, if there is a substantial amount of granules and pieces of shingles, it’s a good sign that the roof received some damage over the winter. One of the places you will want to check for granules will be the gutters.

Damage from Trees and Debris

Look at any trees with branches that overhang the roof. Are any of those branches missing? If they fell over the winter, there is a chance they could have damaged your roof. You will want to get up there and inspect it yourself or have a professional do it for you. Remove any branches and debris that land on the roof as soon as you can.

Leaks in the Home

Something you might notice as the spring rains start to come is a leak inside of your home. If you notice staining or leaks that weren’t there before last winter, it’s the sort of damage you will want to have inspected as soon as possible. It could be an indication of a major problem. You will not want to let this fester, as it is only going to get worse over time.
