Temperatures are beginning to fall to a slightly more comfortable temperature, which means one thing – autumn is coming. This means a few things. First, apple-picking season is almost here. Second, the leaves will begin to change soon. Third, you need to make sure you get the exterior of your home situated before the snowflakes begin to fly. There are a few things that are important parts of caring for your home that you should do each fall. Here are some of the most important things to get done this fall to keep your home safe and maintained.
In the fall, you need to make sure you take care of your landscaping. This means everything from keeping the grass trimmed to pruning the trees in your yard. Make sure your landscaping is ready before fall winds become winter storms. You also need to make sure you rake up any leaves that fall, too. This keeps them from harming your grass so that it grows back nicely in the spring.
While this is no one’s favorite chore, it does need to happen. If your gutters and downspouts are full, not only are you going to struggle with snow and ice buildup, you could also face flooding. When snow melts, it has to go somewhere. If your gutters or your downspouts are full, the water will simply fall near the foundation. This could result in a wet basement or issues with mold from water damage.
If you notice anything outside your home that needs fixing, do it early. If you wait until it’s too cold or it starts to snow, the repairs may not get done. You need to look all around your home and make sure everything is buttoned up tight. Replace caulking around windows and doors, reduce drafts, and seal up anywhere critters could get in. If you have old windows and doors, now is the time to replace them. Trying to do that in December or January is much more difficult.
