Should You Think About Waterproofing Before the Spring?

Are you a homeowner concerned with waterproofing your house before the spring? If so, then take heart. You’re not alone. Waterproofing is a huge deal for people who live in stormy areas, but it’s also important for those who live in older houses and want to guard against the occasional rainstorm. If you fall into either of these categories, then you should definitely consider waterproofing your home. Keeping your house dry, especially in inclement weather, is one of the most important things you can do, so you’ll need to have some strategies for how best to go about this.

Checking Your Roof

Perhaps the most important thing you can do to waterproof your house is checking your roof. If you live near trees, then you’ll definitely have to remove dead leaves and branches, but once the surface is clean, you’ll be able to see if your shingles have sustained any damage. If you notice damage to the outer surface, you’ll either have to perform your own repair or hire a roofer. Other things you can do beyond shingle repair are tape your seams and add tape to your gutters.

Sealing Windows and Doors

The next thing you can do to waterproof your home is seal gaps and cracks in your windows and doors. Many older homes are especially problematic in this regard. I’m sure you’ve seen old windows and doors that are in terrible condition! Fortunately, fixing this problem is fairly straightforward. With some high-quality caulking, you can make repairs that protect your interior and save you a whole lot of money in the long run.

Protect Your Foundation

This may be surprising, but did you know that your concrete isn’t as solid as you think it is? Believe it or not, concrete is actually quite porous, which means water can cause cracks in your foundation. One thing you can do to mitigate this problem is waterproof your basement. To do this, you’ll need a waterproof coating or membrane with drainage panels. Just keep in mind that this can be very expensive. Only go this route if your house is at serious risk of water damage.
