When you first moved in, simply having a garage was wonderful. It held everything you needed and left space for a car. Now, however, after collecting a few treasures over the years, you notice that your once roomy garage is feeling a bit more claustrophobic than it ever used to. This may be your signal that it is time to either add on to your current garage, or go full-tilt and install a brand new one. Whether you decide to add on or start over is up to you, but here are a couple points to think about first.

Figuring Out the Size of Garage You Really Need

The first thing you need to do is figure out if putting your car in the garage is something you are realistically going to do. Some people devote their garages to their vehicles, while others know that it is going to stay parked by the door so it is easy to jump in the car and go. Once you figure out if you need room for your car, then decide if you want one or two stalls. For those who have multiple vehicles, you can fit more in there, too, so long as your property is large enough.

Next, you need to figure out what you are going to use the garage space for. If all you want is car storage, then no need to go larger than the cars you plan to hold. However, if you want a man cave, a work shop, and a place to hold anything your basement cannot store, then obviously you will need more square footage.
